Sport has become big business

Sport has become a multi-billion dollar international industry. Sponsorship, merchandising and the world wide sale of media rights have fuelled the growth of the industry.

Athletes have become brands, earning as much and more from product endorsements and off field activities as they do on the pitch.

Clubs and sporting associations have realized that as rights holders they hold valuable assets that can be sold across media platforms and continents.

As the value of these assets has grown so has the potential for disputes .
